Steven Lee Johnson, 72, of North Platte, Nebraska, went to his heavenly home unexpectedly on October 17, 2025. He was born on October 7, 1953, to Clarence Leonard and Rita Lucile (Heppner) Johnson. Steve was the oldest of five children, proudly taking on the role of big brother to his four sisters.
From a young age, Steve was known for his strong work ethic and steady hands. As a teenager, he worked for Interholzinger Farms, Tomahawk Truck Stop, and the Nebraska Department of Roads before beginning a long and dedicated 34-year career with Union Pacific Railroad in the Signal Department. If it involved electricity, Steve could fix it—and usually made it look easy. He was a proud member of REACT, a CB radio organization, and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS). Steve loved talking on CB radios and was well known for his humor and good-natured teasing of family and friends.
Steve married Connie Ross, and to this union two daughters were born: Lee Ann (Eddie) Fullmer of Lusk, Wyoming, and Mary Johnson of Mullen, Nebraska. He later married the love of his life, Phyllis Abel, and together they shared 43 wonderful years. To this union three children were born: Jesse Lee Johnson and Brandon Lee Johnson, both of North Platte, and Kayle Ann (Shane) Enstrom of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Steve was a proud grandfather to Blaze, Malakai, Tytan, Payton, and Ayden, whose laughter always brought him joy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis; his children and grandchildren; his sisters, Cindy (Justin) Goforth, Terry Pitkin, Linda (Tim) Jobman, and Tammy Pursley; his brother-in-law Mike (Pam) Abel; and sisters-in-law Judy Pyzer and Nancy (Eddy) Morrell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Rita Johnson; his father- and mother-in-law, George and Alberta Abel; brothers-in-law Steven Jobman, Gene Pursley, Jerry Pitkin, and Butch (Lowell) Pyzer; and sister-in-law Janet Abel.
Steve will be greatly missed by his wife Phyllis, his children and grandchildren, and his many nieces, nephews, and friends. Those who knew him will remember his gentle humor, steady presence, and generous heart. His love and laughter will remain forever in the hearts of those he touched
