O n July 27, 2022, at the age of 96, Maxine Griffin peacefully passed away while residing at Linden Court in North Platte, NE.
Maxine was one of six children born to William and Mabel Wilson. She was born September 12, 1925, in Sutherland where she grew up. After graduating from Sutherland High School in 1944, Maxine moved to Long Beach, CA, to be with her family and there she attended junior college for two years then went on to graduate from St. Vincent's College of Nursing in 1950. She worked in the O.B. Dept. at St. Vincent's for a short time then moved to North Platte where she worked in the operating room at St. Mary's Hospital. Maxine continued her nursing career until she became a mother.
On August 23, 1952, Maxine was united in marriage to John 'Jack' Griffin at the Catholic Church in Paxton. They lived on Jack's aunt's farm for 11 years and during this time five children were born.
The Griffin family moved to a farm in Wellington, CO, in 1962 where Maxine and Jack lived for 54 years. Jack farmed and worked in the animal science department at C.S.U. and Maxine returned to nursing at Weld County General Hospital where she worked as a Registered Nurse in Labor and Delivery for four years. She eventually became an instructor in the L.P.N. Program at the local junior college and taught nursing classes for 13 years before taking the job as Assistant Head Nurse on the Surgical Unit at the V.A. Hospital in Cheyenne, WY. Maxine retired from nursing in 1991. She loved what she did and always wanted to be a nurse.
After Jack retired the following year, they bought a motor home and traveled as far as Alaska and wintered in Arizona for over 20 years. They returned to Nebraska in 2016 and lived in North Platte where they were members of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Maxine and Jack were married for nearly 67 years when he passed away in 2019.
Maxine belonged to many committees, was president of the Wellington Senior Center for four years, and when her children were young she was a 4-H leader. Maxine enjoyed her family and her many activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents, William and Mabel Wilson; and all her siblings, Villa Kennedy, Emory, Darle and Merle Wilson and Shirley Lyles.
Maxine is survived by her children, Cindy (Dennis) Burton of North Platte, John Griffin, of Arkansas, Dave (Jodi) Griffin and James Griffin of Fort Collins, CO, and Michael Griffin of New Port Richey, FL; grandchildren, Angela (Alex) Barton, Eric (Ursula) Burton, Matthew Griffin, Travis (Erin) Griffin, Nathan (Amy) Griffin, Jeremy (Anna) Griffin and Kyle Griffin; 12 great-grandchildren; a great great-granddaughter; 3 step great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, RoseAnn Tridle, of Rapid City, SD; and other family.
Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at Odean Colonial Chapel with Father Sagar officiating. Burial will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation is prior to services at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. For those unable to attend, services will be recorded and posted to odeanchapel.com.
