Marilyn Lee (Haist) Huebner, of North Platte, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026.
Marilyn was born on July 4, 1933, in Hershey, Nebraska, to Bill and Edna Haist. She was the second of four children. Marilyn graduated from Hershey High School in 1951 and married George Huebner on November 25, 1951. They made their home on the family farm south of Hershey, where they raised their five sons. In 2002, Marilyn and George moved to North Platte.
One of Marilyn’s favorite childhood memories was helping at the North Platte Canteen during World War II alongside her mother, aunts, and cousins. As one of the youngest helpers, she worked in the kitchen while her slightly older cousins were allowed on the platform to greet the soldiers—an experience she cherished throughout her life.
Among her most treasured adult memories was traveling with the 1976 Centennial Wagon Train, which journeyed across the country to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, for the national Bicentennial celebration. She made the trip by wagon with a team of horses alongside George’s uncle, George Hedges of Central City, Nebraska.
Marilyn inherited her love of gardening from her father and spent her life tending roses, iris, peonies, and a variety of other perennials. She loved being outdoors and took great pride in her gardens. She also enjoyed swimming and continued to swim regularly until the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily closed the recreation center.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, George Huebner; her son Wayne Huebner; great-granddaughters Tori Huebner and Arriana Moe; her parents Bill and Edna Haist; brothers William Mitchell Haist and Charles Frederick Haist; and niece Tracy Miller.
Marilyn is survived by her sons Cal (Barbara), Mitch (Rachelle), Dan (Allison), and Steve; her sister Clarice Hedges; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and six nieces and nephews.
