Lowell Fredrick 'Bud' Wheeler, 84, of Bayard, NE, formerly of North Platte, died Sunday, August 19, 2018, in Colorado.
Lowell was born March 20, 1934, in North Platte to Kermit and Ruby Wheeler. He grew up in North Platte where he went to the Berean Church and graduated from high school. Lowell then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and served until '55.
Following his discharge, Lowell returned to Nebraska and while working in Ogallala he met Roxana Imel. They were married in 1955 and made their home in North Platte where Lowell was an agent for Farmers Insurance. They later moved to Seattle, WA, for a short time while Lowell worked for Boeing before returning to North Platte. Then in 1964 the family moved to Denver, CO, where Lowell continued selling insurance.
Lowell liked being in the military so after he got out of the Navy he joined the Army National Guard. Part of his duties included teaching classes to others in the guard. After serving over 20 years with the National Guard, he retired on March 20, 1994.
Lowell is survived by his sons, Kermit 'Kim' (Linda) Wheeler, of Lake Havasu City, AZ, Shawn Wheeler, of North Platte and Daryn Wheeler, of Gering; daughter-in-law, Anne Wheeler, of Glendale, AZ; grandchildren, Gracie, Mason, Nathan and Brianna; great-granddaughter, Callie; brother, Delbert Wheeler, of Colorado Springs, CO; sisters, Linda (Larry) Hobbs, of North Platte and Margie (Bill) Heston, of Washington; as well as many nieces, nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kermit and Ruby; son, Gene Wheeler; daughter-in-law, Wendy Wheeler; brother, Vernon; sisters, Cleo and Sandra; and grandson, Zach.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, August 31, 2018, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore with George Cheek officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation will be prior to the service at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.
