Louis Cauffman

L ouis C auffman of Dickens, NE, passed away at his beloved ranch next to his best friend and wife, Sherry Jo, on January 1, 2025, at age 84.

Louis was born in North Platte on May 18, 1940, to Louis and Mary Cauffman of the Ojibwe (Chippewa) Tribe.  He was extremely proud of his heritage.

Louis grew up and attended school in North Platte then enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served on the USS San Pablo AGS-30.  After his honorable discharge he returned to Nebraska and began a dedicated career with the Union Pacific Railroad and enjoyed ranching.

On August 3, 1973, Louis married the love of his life, Sherry Jo, and from that day forward they were inseparable.  After retiring from ranch life they dedicated their free time as winter Texans.

Louis had a passion for fishing, camping, hunting, and ranch life.  While doing the things he loved, his wife, children and grandchildren were always involved.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Jo; daughter, Shanna Cauffman; sons, Billiejo (Sarah) Cauffman and Cash (Amy) Cauffman; grandchildren, Josie, Chase, Carlee, Cora, Gracie, Mia, Finley and Cutler; great-grandchildren, Liam, Kate and a sweet baby boy on the way.  Survivors also include two children from a previous marriage, son, Randy (Christy) Cauffman and children, Joshua and Andrew, and daughter, Janelle and her daughter, Joni (Chad) Todd and their son, Tristen; and Louis' sister, Pearl McMahon; as well as other family.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents; and half siblings, Irene Cotton and Les Dauphin.

Graveside service with military honors will be 11 a.m., Friday, January 10, in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. The memorial book may be signed online at odeanchapel.com.  Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
