Joe Ratzlaff

Joseph Ratzlaff, of North Platte, died at the Sutherland Care Center on Sunday, January 17, 2021, at the age of 99.

Joe was born at Jansen, Nebraska, to Henry and Frances Ratzlaff on November 1, 1921. In March of 1922 the family moved to a farm north of Sutherland then to a ranch north of Paxton. Joe attended rural schools until the 8th grade. It wasn't until 2000 when Joe proudly received his GED.

Joe worked for different ranchers until May of 1942 when he was called into the U.S. Army. Joe and his three brothers, all served during World War II. Joe served in Africa and Italy then returned home in 1945 where he continued working for farmers and ranchers. He also hired on with NPPD and had a career that spanned 31 years until retiring in 1987.

On June 3, 1977, Joe married Alice Befort of Sutherland. They lived in Paxton until 1989 when they moved to North Platte to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Joe enjoyed belonging to various organizations in Paxton. He served on the Village Board for a term, was a member of the Volunteer Fire Department for 18 years and served as Finance Officer, and was a member of American Legion Post #303, where he served as Commander, was Keith County Commander for a year and held several other offices. Joe also belonged to V.F.W. Post #3755 in Ogallala and Diamond K Kiwanis Club in North Platte.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Anna, Mable, Agnes, Grace and Katherine; brothers, Bearnard, Enos and Franklin; and Alice's son, Paul Befort.

Joe is survived by his wife, Alice, her son, John (Barbara) Befort, and her daughter-in-law, Carol Befort, all of North Platte; niece, Jamie (John) Franco, of California; as well as three step grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren; and other family.

Cremation was chosen and inurnment will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors. Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
