Jim Hassett

J ames "Jim" Hassett of North Platte passed away at Great Plains Health on September 29, 2023, at the age of 80.

Jim, the son of Joseph and Beulah Hassett, was born in Salem, OR, on April 8, 1943.  He grew up in Grand Island and graduated from St. Paul High School then enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served from 1960 to 1964.  He helped in the building of the U.S.S. Henry B. Wilson and served on it.

Following his discharge, Jim moved to North Platte where he took a job with the city for 5 years.  He then operated Kirby Vacuums and had his own real estate company.

On February 14, 1976, Jim married Shannon Egle and to this union Tiffany was born and Ryan was adopted.  The couple later divorced.

Jim was a member of the American Legion.  He enjoyed trips to Vegas and spending time with his nephew, Kurt.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul and Jack Hassett; and his sister, Gean Witsteaen.

Survivors include his children, David Hassett, Tiffany (Clayton) Manning of North Platte and Ryan (Heather) Hassett of New Jersey; his sisters, Sue (Clyde) Perkins and Geri Nunnekamp of Oregon; brother, Howard (Deanna) Hassett of Grand Island; his special friend, Michelle Dircksen of North Platte and her family; six grandchildren; and many other family members.

Graveside service with military honors will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 6, at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery.  Visitation is Thursday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.  Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com.  Memorials will be designated at a later time.
