Jan George

November 8, 1933 — September 20, 2024

J an G eorge, wife of the late Ken George, passed away September 20, 2024, at age 90.

Jan, the daughter of Elmer and Marguerite Swanson, was born November 8, 1933.  She grew up in Omaha where she graduated from Benson High School and later attended nursing school.  Jan graduated from Immanuel Nursing School as a Registered Nurse and then worked at Children's Hospital in Omaha.

On September 11, 1954, Jan married Kenneth George in Omaha.  The couple lived in Omaha for several years until Ken was transferred to North Platte in 1969 with his job at Northwestern Bell. They had three sons and were married for 63 years when Ken passed away.

Jan loved her family, her pet and companion, Tiffi, and she enjoyed being around people.  She participated in many activities at the Senior Center and was involved with Compassionate Friends, PEO, Shrine Auxiliary and the Quilters Guild.  She was also employed by North Platte Public Schools and worked in the reading program and media center.

Jan was a woman of faith and a longtime member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School for Christians of 3 for 25 years and was a member of Ruth Circle.  In later years she attended First Presbyterian Church.

Along with her husband, Ken, she was preceded in death by their son, Tim; her parents; brother, Warren Swanson and wife, Marilyn; sister-in-law, Nancy Lewis; and her beloved Tiffi.

Jan is survived by her sons, Steven George of Lakewood, CO, and Gary George (Jim Cox) of Omaha; nieces, Debbie Long (Hal) and Jamie Alley (Mike) and nephew, Russell Swanson (Tammy) and their families; and her cousins Miriam Sward and Elaine Spady (Steve) and family.

Services are 10 a.m., Wednesday, September 25, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church.  Burial is 1 p.m. in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.  Visitation is Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and with family present from 4-6 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the North Platte Senior Center.  Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com.  Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
