G regory V argas, age 71, of North Platte, died at Great Plains Health on Monday, September 28, 2020.
Greg was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Mildred and Fulgencio Vargas on February 16, 1949. He grew up in Council Bluffs and after graduating high school enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1967. Greg served in Vietnam then was assigned to Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha.
Following his honorable discharge in ‘71, Greg moved to North Platte where he began working as a meter reader for the gas company then hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad. He worked as a Switchman then Conductor until retiring.
On October 9, 1993, Greg married Kimberly Cortez in North Platte and they were together for over 10 years when she died.
Greg was baptized in the Catholic church and was a member of Eagle Aeries #2839. He liked being with his family and enjoyed mowing his yard.
Along with his wife, Kim, he was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gary Vargas, and sister, Stephanie Vargas.
Survivors include Greg’s daughters, Nicole (Deon) Jackson and Michelle Vargas, all of North Platte; grandchildren, Zack Vargas, Derek (Delaney) Vargas, Cayden Jackson and Chantel Vargas; great-granddaughter, Ellie; sisters, Pamela Proctor, of Council Bluffs and Mercedes ‘Mercy’ Dschaak, of Omaha; brother, Frank Vargas, of Las Vegas; and other family.
Memorial service with Military Honors will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 16, at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore. The memorial book may be signed online at odeanchapel.com or at the service. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
