Gilmer Blakely, age 83, of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 25, 2025.
Gilmer was born on February 11, 1942, in Blaine County, Nebraska, to Emery and Helen (Thomas) Blakely. He attended school in Dunning and graduated in 1959. After high school, Gilmer joined the Nebraska National Guard and spent his life farming and ranching near Dunning. A lifelong resident of the Sandhills, Gilmer often said, "You can take the man out of the Sandhills, but you can't take the Sandhills out of the man."
He is survived by his two daughters, Anne (Martin) Johnson of North Platte and Kimberly Lanksburry of California; two grandchildren, Thomas Hoatson and Taya (Preston) Garringer; and one great-granddaughter, Adalynn.
In keeping with Gilmer’s wishes, cremation was chosen, and no formal services will be held at this time.
