D onald S chrader of North Platte, Nebraska, passed away on April 28, 2022, at the age of 96.
Don was born to John and Johanna Schrader on June 19, 1925, at Stapleton. The family moved to Brady in 1940 and that is where Don graduated from high school in 1944. He was then inducted into the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Clarendon Troop Transport in the South Pacific. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Don returned home.
On August 16, 1948, Don was united in marriage to Nadeen Jeffries. They made their home in North Platte where they raised their family.
Don worked as a bookkeeper for Nash Finch until 1954 when he joined the Nebraska State Patrol. He was a dispatcher for 32 years until retiring in 1986. He a member of the Eagles, Moose Lodge, V.F.W. and P.R. Halligan Post #163 American Legion.
After retiring, Don and Nadeen looked forward to spending winter months in Port Aransas, TX. They enjoyed being together and attending Nebraska football games, taking trips with their friends, and just sitting on the back porch. Don and Nadeen especially loved watching their grandkids in their sporting activities and enjoyed listening to them tell their stories. Just spending time with the grandkids and great-grandkids was important. Don and Nadeen were married for 59 wonderful years until she passed away in 2007.
Not only was his family important, so were his friends and his faith. Don liked starting his mornings with coffee at Arby's and was a faithful member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He was a real sports fan who liked all sports, especially Nebraska football and volleyball and the Kansas City Royals. If the game wasn't on TV, he would listen to it on the radio.
Don will be remembered for his kindness, quietness, and being a true gentleman.
Along with his wife, Nadeen, he was preceded in death by their daughter, Roxie Simon; his parents; sister, Mary Lea Brooks; and brothers, Paul, Jack, Bud and James.
Don is survived by his daughter, Patty (Mike) Curtis, and son-in-law, Joe Simon, of North Platte; grandchildren, Stacy (Chad) Carder, Mindy (Mark) Wall, Brooke (Brad) Morrison and Chad Curtis; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Kyle Jackson, Kasch and Karsen Morrison, Mady and Morgan Wall, and Paige Rogers; his special friend and neighbor, Kris Krzycki; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and his many, many friends that he has met throughout his life and considered them all special.
Graveside service with military honors will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with Father Sagar officiating. Visitation is 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
