R ichard "Dick" Armstrong was born on May 20, 1946 in Lewellen, NE to Ralph Clinton and Wilma Mae Armstrong. He passed away June 24, 2025, at his home in North Platte, NE after a courageous battle with a long term illness.
The family, which consisted of 1 brother and 2 sisters, moved to Lewellen when he was 2 months old. His youngest sister, Sherry, joined the family in 1947. Dick attended grade school and high school in Lewellen, graduating in the class of 1964.
After graduation, Dick worked for Grace's north of Lewellen for 1½ years, then moved to Lincoln, NE and worked at Montgomery Wards. He was drafted into the US Army in January 1966. His military career started at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, then advanced artillery training at Fort Sill, OK. In June 1966, Dick was sent to Fort Dix, NJ then was on a troop ship to Schweinfurt, Germany where he was a gunner in the U.S. military stationed in Germany. He was discharged from the Army in December 1967.
In February 1968, Dick started barber school in Omaha, NE and finished his schooling in Lincoln, NE. He worked in Lincoln until 1970 when he moved to Ogallala, NE. Dick was a barber in Oshkosh and Lewellen until he semi-retired in the mid 1990's and was then the Village Maintenance man for Lewellen. In the early 2000's, Dick moved to North Platte where he again started barbering until he fully retired in 2014. In total, he devoted 43 years to barbering.
In Lewellen, Dick was an EMT as well as a volunteer fire fighter for Blue Creek Fire Department, serving many years as their chief. Dick was active in Masons and Shriners in his younger years. Dick enjoyed hunting, spending time outdoors in his garage, and removing snow in the winter time with his 4-wheeler.
On May 30, 1968, Dick was united in marriage to DyAnn K. Delatour in Lincoln. To this union was born Katherine L. "Kathy" in February 1969 and Deborah A. "Annie" in February 1970. "Glad you got to see me, Dad". They later divorced.
On April 23, 1993, Dick was united in marriage to Linda Cheyney in Ogallala.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Wilma Armstrong; sisters, Sherry Wiggins, Peggy Armstrong, and Bonnie Dringman; his first wife, DyAnn Armstrong; and niece, Jamye Wiggins.
Dick is survived by his wife, Linda of North Platte; his daughters, Kathy (Mike) Feagler of Lincoln and Annie Armstrong of North Platte; brother, Clint Armstrong (Linda Peters) of Ogallala; mother-in-law, Dorothy Murr and family of North Platte; stepson, Faron (April) Cheyney and family of Ogallala; stepdaughter, Laura (Lance) Hastings and family of North Platte; nephews, Jeff (Elyse) Armstrong and family of Omaha, Justin (Sharon) Armstrong and family of Lincoln, and Jason Wiggins and family of Golden, CO; niece, Lisa (Tim) Parsons and family of Biloxi, MS.
Dick is also survived by several nieces & nephews and in-laws from his first marriage as well as his special neighbors Cameron and Jayna, Lonnie and Bill, Chuck and Angie, and Mary; many lifetime friends; and his cat, Maggie Mae.
Graveside service with military honors is 10:30 a.m. (MT), Friday, June 27, at Ash Hollow Cemetery at Lewellen. The memorial book may be signed at the graveside, online at odeanchapel.com, or prior to the service at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Tiger Den in Lewellen.
