Dennis Lee Barkley

Dennis Barkley passed away on November 23, 2025. Dennis was born on January 16, 1941, at Bradley, South Dakota. His parents were LeRoy and Dorothy Barkley of Garden City, South Dakota. Dennis attended school in Garden City and was very active in sports. In his junior year of high school, he was nominated by the South Dakota Associated Press as one of the top ten basketball players in the state. He married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Young, and after graduation they moved to Watertown, South Dakota, where he went to work as a door-to-door milkman. After several years he decided to go back to college and attended South Dakota State for two years. He then went to work for Associates Finance Company in South Dakota and was later transferred to North Platte, NE. He later went to work for North Platte State Bank and eventually retired from Pinnacle Bank in Grant, NE.

Dennis served on several service clubs and was treasurer of Rotary District 5630 for six years. He was secretary/treasurer of the Leu Foundation, Inc., which gave thousands of dollars in scholarships in the North Platte area and to numerous charitable organizations. For many years, Dennis and Sharon traveled with friends all over the United States and across Canada on motorcycle. Dennis and Sharon spent their winters in Arizona for 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter Jody Isabell (Don); son Todd (Tracie) Barkley; daughter Sharie Goodman; daughter-in-law Julie; sisters Romagen Rawlins of Clark, South Dakota, and Rita Gengler of Arizona; grandchildren Susan, Tony, Tancy, Jalana, Amanda, Aaron, Kayla, Jennifer, Candisue, Danyle, and Brandi; many great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson, Kailum Esch, who was born on Dennis’s birthday.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Ed Christensen; oldest son Danny; brother David Christensen; and great-granddaughter Maryssa Isabell.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Monday, December 8 at First United Methodist Church in North Platte, NE with Pastor Michael Evans officiating. A luncheon will follow the service.
