D elores "Dee" Highberger was ushered by angels to heaven to be embraced in the arms of Jesus on June 21, 2025.
Dee was born August 2, 1939, in Luverne, MN, to Albert and Dorothy Brinkhous. Her family moved to Nebraska during Dee's youth. She married Larry Shindle and together they had two daughters, Kay and Gale. They later divorced. She then married Kenneth Highberger of Curtis.
Dee was a quiet lady who preferred to spend much of her time alone. She enjoyed painting for hours. She was so proud of the "Lord's Supper" that she had completed, framed and hung with pride. Dee enjoyed playing Bingo, drawing, cross-stitching and collecting angels, dog statues and stuffed bears. Dee enjoyed country music and loved dancing before her health declined. She had a love for dogs, specifically Maltese.
Her daughters both share the sweet memory of hearing their mother competitively say "I love you more and more and more and more...", words shared by her daughters to their children and grandchildren today. Dee was an extraordinary baker! She will be remembered for her homemade cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, cream puffs and rice pudding to name just a few.
Dee was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Dorothy Brinkhous; her husband, Kenneth Highberger; son-in-law, Paige Teets; and brother-in-law, Fred Werkmeister.
Survivors include her daughters, Kay (Kyle) Nichols and Gale Teets of North Platte; grandchildren, Casey (Ashley) Werkmeister, Kyle (Starla) Werkmeister, Jason (Natalie) Teets, and Andrew (Jenn) Teets; great-grandchildren, Max, Gatlin, Quinn, Bellamy, Hudson, Tenlee and Drex Werkmeister and Peytan, Christian, Rian, Nolan, Katie, Easton and Evie Teets; her sister, LaVonne Werkmeister; and special nephew, Darin Werkmeister; as well as other family.
Celebration of Dee's life will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, June 27, at the Berean Church with Pastor John Stone officiating. Burial will be around 5 p.m. in the Gothenburg Cemetery. Visitation is prior to the service at the church. Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com. Memorials can be made to the North Platte Animal Shelter. Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore is in charge of arrangements.
