B arbara Y onkey, 78, of North Platte, passed away December 1, 2024, at Linden Court.
Barbara was born February 12, 1946, to Willard and Pauline Young at Sunbury, OH. In 1964 she graduated from Fallbrook High School in California then worked at Paulson Manufacturing for a few years until getting married.
While in California, Barbara married Lamont "Monty" Yonkey, a young Marine from Nebraska, on June 1, 1969. The couple moved to Lincoln then North Platte in 1972 where Monty served with the Nebraska State Patrol. Barbara worked at Gibsons, Allen's Self Service and later for the North Platte Library. She retired from the library in 2014.
Barbara was a member of the Eagles, American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries and the N.R.A. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed researching genealogy.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; brothers, James and Harvey Young; sister-in-law, Betty Yonkey; and nephew, Jason Yonkey.
Survivors include her sister, Brenda Bronson (Ted); sister-in-law, Connie Johnson (Merlin); brother-in-law, Arthur Yonkey; nephews and nieces, Stetson Young, Wade Young, Troy Johnson (Rashida), Deb Yonkey Farmer, Chelsy Lopez, Renee Charette and Megan Yonkey; many grandnieces, grandnephews and other family.
Services are 1 p.m., Monday, December 9, at First Presbyterian Church (1901 W Leota St.) with Pastor Emily McCreery officiating. Burial to follow in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Visitation is prior to the service at the church. Memorials are to the Salvation Army or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Online condolences may be shared at odeanchapel.com.
