Alwaska “Al” Ike Barber Jr., 86, passed away on May 30, 2026, on the property he loved and called home since 1979.
Al was born on February 26, 1940, in Fort Collins, Colorado. At the age of six, he was adopted by Alwaska Sr. and Evelyn Barber, who lovingly raised him.
A proud veteran, Al served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1963. Following his military service, he spent 46 years working for Union Pacific Railroad, holding many different positions and dedicating himself to a career built on hard work, determination, and loyalty.
Al was known by many names throughout his life. To some, he was Al, while others knew him as Tito Gonzalez, George, or simply Chief. No matter what name he answered to, he was known for the same qualities: a generous spirit, a strong work ethic, a great sense of humor, and a willingness to help anyone who needed it.
His family meant everything to him, especially his grandchildren. He took pride in being a grandfather and loved creating memories that would be talked about for years. One family tradition that became legendary was the “Oshkosh Call.” Every time someone drove through Oshkosh, they knew to call Grandpa and yell, “Oh my gosh, Oshkosh!” as loud as they could. If they did, they could count on a $20 reward and hearing his laughter on the other end of the phone.
Al's greatest wisdom was to never leave home without your keys, wallet, and hat. He was always prepared for whatever life might bring.
Al is survived by his children, Tracey Carpenter, Holly Aguiar, Christopher Barber, Sheila Alvarez (Pelõn), and Brandon Barber (Ryann); stepson, Daniel Endicott (Roxann); 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Alwaska Sr. and Evelyn Barber, as well as his former wives, Sherry Dugue, Mary Barber, Kayla Shepard, and Pamela Endicott.
Al will be remembered for his stories, his laughter, his generosity, his colorful nicknames, and the countless ways he showed up for the people he loved. His presence was larger than life, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A private family service will be held at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with military honors.
