Alex Nelson

A lexander N elson died at his home in North Platte, NE, on February 12, 2025, at the age of 49.

Alex was born March 12, 1975, in Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany, while his family was stationed there with the U.S. Army.  After returning stateside and coming to North Platte, Alex and his brother, Ken, went to live with Chuck and Jannie Matzen (their foster family for three years) then were adopted along with their sister, Elizabeth, by Ray and Gwen Nelson.

Alex graduated from North Platte High School in 1993.  He worked at Runza for many years and was Assistant Manager in North Platte and General Manager at the Gothenburg location.  While in Gothenburg, Alex met Mandi Walker and they married in September of 1995.  The couple welcomed their daughter, Amber, and later divorced.  He then returned to North Platte and worked various jobs until going to work at Wendy's.

Alex was a real history buff.  He loved reading and learning (especially about history), enjoyed watching WWE, and playing Dungeons & Dragons, becoming a Dungeon Master for over 10 years.  He also enjoyed listening to classic rock and heavy metal music, online gaming, disc golf, and was a member of the Platte Valley Gun Club.

Life was not always easy for Alex but he did try to make the best of his situations.  He is loved and will be missed by those who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Nelson; foster parents, Jannie and Chuck Matzen; his birth mother, Rosemary Kingsley Stackhouse; and grandparents, Owen and June Nelson and Elgie and Nadine Bell

Alex leaves behind his daughter, Amber Nelson (Mack Trotta) of Omaha and his mother, Gwen Krzykowski of North Platte; brothers, Ken Nelson and John (Amy) Nelson of North Platte; sisters, Cheri (Sam) Laughter of Tulsa, OK, Julie McCleary of North Platte and Elizabeth (Tory) Copeland of Sutherland; and many nieces, nephews and other family.

Celebration of Alex's life will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, February 21, at Odean Colonial Chapel.  The memorial book may be signed at odeanchapel.com or prior to the service at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the family.
